What Are Tinctures?

Tinctures are liquid extracts from herbs that you take orally. They usually are extracted in alcohol, but can also be extracted in vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol). It is made by soaking herbs and other plant parts in alcohol for 6 to 8 weeks to extract the active ingredients. The herbal mixture is then strained, leaving only the concentrated liquid.

Tinctures are taken directly under the tongue, therefore they enter the bloodstream much more quickly and directly. Depending on the herbs used, think of tinctures as taking an herbal supplement or vitamins, however, tinctures are much more potent!

How Do You Take A Tincture?

Tinctures are taken by the dropperful. One full dropper contains approximately 30 drops. A standard dosage for adults is one full dropper 2-3 times a day. With this dosage, a one ounce bottle will last about 2 weeks. It is best to take drops directly under the tongue that way the herbs go directly into the bloodstream. They can also be diluted in a small amount of water or juice to help mask the taste. Add lemon or honey as needed.

Are Tinctures Safe for Pregnant or Nursing Women?

Yes, tinctures are fine for pregnant and nursing women; even the alcohol-based versions. One dose of a alcohol-based tincture has approximately the same alcohol content as eating a very ripe banana. However, it is important to know what the tincture is made out, as some herbs are not safe for pregnant or nursing women.

The Bacteria Balance Tincture is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women because they contain Mugwort and Pau D’arco Bark.

I encourage you to do your own research on dosage based on your specific health needs, and consult with a local herbalist or health care specialist.
